Peter O'Toole is best known for his leading role in the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia. O'Toole played the role of Thomas Edward Lawrence, a British Army officer posted in Arabia during WWI and the film has become regarded as one of the most influential and beloved movies of the 20th century. The film touched on themes of personal identity and allegiance, presenting Lawrence as the heroic figure (not unlike the Western gunslinger in American films) but also showed his rise and fall to martyrdom, showing the very human side to reality. Lawrence of Arabia proved to be O'Toole's rise to stardom, from which he would go on to act in several other big-name productions.

  6. Florence Lawrence was one of the first actresses whose personal fame was used to promote her company’s films. Originally from Canada, she started performing in plays and musicals at age three. At age twenty, Lawrence was cast in the 1907 production Daniel Boone. After accepting work at another studio, however she was blacklisted by the Motion Picture Trust. Headed by Thomas Edison, the Trust had patents on most other studios at the time. Left with no other choice, Lawrence and her husband, director Harry Solter, signed on as the first featured actors at the new Independent Moving Pictures Company run by Carl Laemmle. Discouraged by sabotage and competition from the Motion Picture Trust, Laemmle starting advertising using Lawrence’s reputation. He was the first to do so and Lawrence became the film industry's first recognizable name. This was the height of Lawrence’s career. In 1916, she starred in Elusive Isabel, but the movie had little success. Lawrence committed suicide in 1938 due to a long term illness.

Born Theodosia Goodman in Ohio Theda Bara after graduating High school wanted to become an actress and was in several play productions. Her big break came in 1915 when Theda was 30 years old (making her unique since it was mostly much younger actresses being considered for main roles. Theda starred in “A Fool There Was” as “vampire”. This led to her nickname the vamp. Theda was known for playing sexual women who led men astray. She was the first to say the commonly misquoted “Kiss me, my fool.” Her image was largely fabricated. For instance publicist claimed that “Theda Bara” was truly an anagram for “Arab Death” and Theda was the daughter of an artist and an Arabian prince. Theda starred in many films throughout her career (all silent) but after her 1921 marriage to director Charles Brabin she only made to more. Her final film was made in 1926.

Throughout the early 1900s Rudolph ("Rudy") Valentino's career had hit a climax when he starred in several silent films. His acting career began around 1914 where he usually played the villain, a dancer, and even a gigolo. However, it wasn't until the 1920s when the public really started to take a liking toward him. His leads in "The Four Horsemen Of the Apocalypse," "Camille," and "The Sheik" set the nation in awe, for the women, in particular, would swoon over his common roles of the passionate, romantic Latin lover or Arab type of leading man. During that time it'd been said that no one nearly possessed as much film "star quality" as Valentino, for his suave and and charming characters were often what set a huge label for his name, making him known to female fanatics across the states.
When he died an agonizing death from blood poisoning and pleurisy in August 1926, many American women became hysterical, some even committing suicide. Crowds would break out in rots with individuals begging to see his open coffin at a public service. It was because of Valentino, his fans, and his sensational death, that movies were finally recognized by Wall Street as a legitimate, lucrative business.

Most of her pieces, like little princess and curly top, were stories staring her as the main character. After a lot of acting as a young girl, she slowed down as she got older, and is 85 today.

The early movie star that I chose was Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle. He was one of the most popular actors in the 1910's and signed a $1 million contract with Paramount Pictures. He mentored Charlie Chaplin and discovered Bob Hope. However, he is most famous, or infamous, for the Virginia Rappe case. Arbuckle was accused of rape and manslaughter against Rappe. After two hung juries, Arbuckle won the case. However, the damage had already been done to his career. Many theaters banned his films, and he quickly fell out of grace with the public. He died in 1933, at the age of 46, of a heart attack.
